Social media management

How Much Does Social Media Management Cost?

The short answer

Guides checked on November 5, 2026 put outsourced social media management for a small US business at roughly $500 to $2,000 a month, but none of them traces that range to a study. The one agency that publishes packages we could read, Lyfe Marketing, lists $750 to $1,550 a month for 12 to 20 posts, with ad spend, extra networks and sometimes a setup fee on top.

How much does social media management cost for a small business?

Outsourced social media management for a small US business is most often quoted at about $500 to $2,000 a month. That is the figure eClincher gives in its January 6, 2026 guide, and it is close to what Lyfe Marketing, an agency that publishes its packages, lists: $750 to $1,550 a month.

Treat the range with care. We read the guides that rank for this question on November 5, 2026, and the numbers are mostly unsourced. eClincher links a source for only one figure (a wider $300 to $5,000-plus range) and none for the small-business range. Expert Market's page says small businesses pay $100 to $5,000 a month, states no method, and discloses that it may earn a commission from the vendors it lists. These are not 1920 Agency prices, and we do not publish ours.

The sections below split the cost into the three bills that guides tend to blur together, then show what real packages include.

The three bills: management, ad spend and tools

A social media budget has three separate lines, and a quote usually covers one.

Bill What it pays for Who gets the money
Management fee Planning, designing, posting, replying, reporting The agency or freelancer
Ad spend The impressions and clicks your paid posts buy The platform, such as Meta or TikTok
Tools Scheduling, analytics, design software The software vendor

Lyfe Marketing states the split in one sentence on its pricing page: its fee "only covers our services, not advertising expenses for paid social media ads." It suggests a minimum ad budget of $150 and says investing more usually leads to better results. If a quote does not say which of the three it covers, ask before comparing it with another.

What management actually costs: freelancer, agency or in-house

The guides agree on the shape but not the numbers, and none says whether its figures are US-only.

Option Range given Source and date
Beginner freelancer, retainer $300 to $800 a month eClincher, January 6, 2026
Experienced freelancer, retainer $1,500 to $3,000 or more a month eClincher, January 6, 2026
Freelancer, hourly $25 to $50 entry level; $75 to $150 and up experienced eClincher, January 6, 2026
Freelancer, hourly $35 to $350 Expert Market, updated March 3, 2025
Agency retainer $2,500 (boutique, smaller market) to $7,500 or higher (specialist, major metro) eClincher, January 6, 2026
Agency $500 to $10,000 a month, most paying $500 to $5,000 Expert Market, updated March 3, 2025
Agency, by business size (management company) Small $500 to $2,500; medium $2,500 to $7,500 Lyfe Marketing pricing page, checked November 5, 2026

The pattern is consistent even if the numbers are loose: a freelancer is cheaper, an agency covers more people, and price climbs with the number of networks, the amount of video and the city the provider works in.

An in-house hire is a different decision, since salary comes with benefits, software and training. We did not find a sourced social media manager salary to quote. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a May 2025 median of $74,750 for public relations specialists, a related job that includes monitoring and answering social media questions, but it does not publish social media manager as its own occupation on that page, so we do not use it as one.

What one agency's published packages include

Most agency pages say "contact us." Lyfe Marketing is an exception, and its packages page (checked November 5, 2026) shows how a fee maps to work.

Package Starting price Posts Content
Good $750 a month 12 a month Image posts on Facebook and Instagram
Better $1,350 a month 12 a month Vertical video on Instagram and TikTok
Best $1,550 a month 20 a month Vertical video on Instagram and TikTok

On the page's own numbers, the Good plan is about $62.50 a post and the Best plan about $77.50 a post. Our arithmetic, not Lyfe's. The jump from Good to Better does not buy more posts; it buys video on different networks. Two details change the total:

  • Extra networks cost $150 a month each on top.
  • Ad spend is outside the fee, as above.

That is one firm's list, not the market. But it shows why "$750 a month" and "$1,550 a month" can describe quite different jobs.

Fees and terms the headline price leaves out

Lyfe Marketing's two pages show how easy it is to misread a price. Its packages page says "No Setup Fee," while its pricing page says its costs "include a one-time setup fee of $300." The packages page says clients sign an initial three-month contract and then go month-to-month, while the pricing page says nothing about contract length. Both are the firm's own pages on the same day. We are not saying either is wrong; they may describe different offers. The lesson is to get the setup fee and term in your written quote, whatever the pages say.

Other costs worth asking about:

  • Setup or onboarding. Expert Market lists setup fees of $100 to $1,000 among the hidden costs of agencies, without a source.
  • Additional networks. Lyfe charges $150 a month each; others bundle a fixed number.
  • Video and photography. Reels and shoots take more production than static posts. Our guide to what YouTube video editing costs shows how editing is priced separately.
  • Tax. Lyfe's pricing page does not say whether tax applies; neither do most guides.

What scheduling and management tools cost

If you manage your own accounts, the tool is the main cost. These are the vendors' own list prices, read on November 5, 2026.

Tool Published price Notes
Buffer Free for up to 3 channels; Essentials $5 a month per channel; Team $10 a month per channel Free plan limits scheduled posts to 10 per channel
Hootsuite Standard from $99 a month per user (10 accounts); Professional from $199 (unlimited accounts); Advanced up to $399 Prices shown are for annual billing; a 14-day trial is listed
Sprout Social Essentials $79 a seat a month on annual billing, $99 on monthly billing (5 profiles); Standard $199; Professional $299; Advanced $399 A 30-day trial is listed

Buffer's page shows its annual price inconsistently with its monthly price, so we quote only the monthly figure. Check the current page before buying.

A tool does not replace the work. It schedules posts; someone still has to plan, design and answer comments.

Why guide ranges differ so much

Three things explain why one guide says $100 and another says $10,000.

  1. Scope. Some figures cover posting only; others include ads, video and reporting.
  2. Who is quoted. Freelancers, boutique agencies and large agencies are blended into one range.
  3. Who writes the guide. Most of the pages that rank are written by software vendors or lead-generation sites. That does not make the numbers wrong, but nobody shows the sample behind them.

That is why this page names the source and date next to each figure. If a guide quotes a number with neither, you cannot check it.

How to budget for social media

A workable method that avoids relying on any range:

  1. Decide the goal first. Brand presence, enquiries and online sales need different work. Our guide on why Facebook ads get clicks but no sales shows what goes wrong when the goal and the tracking do not match.
  2. List the networks where your customers are. Each extra network adds work, and at Lyfe it adds $150 a month.
  3. Set the monthly fee and the ad budget separately. For ad pricing, see our Facebook ads agency cost guide and the comparison of Meta ads and Google ads.
  4. Ask for the reporting you will use. Followers are easy to report. Messages, enquiries and sales are what justify the fee.
  5. Review at three months. Check results against the goal you set, not against likes.

Social media is rarely the only channel. If you are comparing it with search, our SEO cost guide uses the same method. Readers outside the US can see how four Pakistani firms price the same work in our Pakistan social media packages guide.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • How many posts per network per month, and how many are video?
  • Who owns the accounts, logins and creative files if we leave?
  • What is the setup fee, the minimum term and the notice period?
  • Is ad spend paid from our account directly to the platform, and what do you charge to manage it?
  • Who replies to comments and messages, and when?
  • What does the monthly report show, and can you show a sample?
  • Does the price include tax and the tools you use?

A provider that answers these in a sentence each is selling a plan, not a tier name.

How 1920 Agency quotes social media work

1920 Agency does not publish social media prices. We look at your profiles, who buys from you and which platforms they use, then quote a monthly plan that lists the networks, the content, the replies and the reporting it covers. Our social media management service starts from that plan, not from a tier.

We run Meta ads for Muzaree, optimised for purchases, and we run our own reporting through automation. We are an independent agency based in Islamabad, with locations in Rawalpindi and Lahore, working with clients in Pakistan, the US, the UK and Australia.

Frequently asked questions

How much does social media management cost per month for a small business?

eClincher's January 2026 guide says $500 to $2,000 a month for small businesses, Expert Market's page says $100 to $5,000, and Lyfe Marketing lists $750 to $1,550 for its own packages. None of the guides names a study behind its range, so treat them as a spread of vendor opinions, not a market average.

Is ad spend included in social media management fees?

Normally not. Lyfe Marketing's pricing page says its fee covers its services, not the cost of paid ads, and suggests at least $150 of ad budget. The ad money is paid to the platform. A management fee for running the campaigns is a separate line.

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?

On eClincher's figures, a beginner freelancer retainer is $300 to $800 a month and a seasoned one $1,500 to $3,000 or more, against agency retainers from $2,500. The gap is real but so is the scope: ask who covers sick days, design, video, replies and reporting.

Do I still pay for scheduling software if an agency manages my accounts?

Sometimes. Some agencies use their own tools and fold the cost into the fee, others expect you to hold the subscription. Buffer lists $5 a month per channel on its Essentials plan and Hootsuite lists plans from $99 a month per user on annual billing, so ask which is included.

What should I ask before signing a social media contract?

Ask for the minimum term, notice period, setup fee, number of posts per network, who owns the accounts and creative files, who pays the platforms for ads, and what the monthly report will show. Lyfe Marketing's own two pricing pages disagree on its setup fee and contract term, which shows why you need the answer in writing.

Can social media management cost less than $500 a month?

Yes, at the low end: eClincher lists $300 to $800 a month for beginner freelancers, and Expert Market's range starts at $100. At that price expect limited posts, few networks and little reporting, so check what is actually delivered.

Does 1920 Agency publish social media prices?

No. 1920 Agency looks at your profiles, your customers and the platforms they use, then quotes a monthly plan listing the networks, content, replies and reporting it covers.
