How Much Does SEO Cost for a Small Business in 2026?

The short answer

SEO for a small business usually costs a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month: published packages checked on October 28, 2026 start at US$499 from firms pricing in dollars and £295 plus VAT in the UK. In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, 79.1 percent of those in the US and Canada charged at least $1,001 a month on retainer, and what each price includes varies more than the price itself. Ahrefs' 2025 study found only 1.74 percent of new pages reached Google's top 10 within a year, so budget in months, not weeks.

How much does SEO cost per month for a small business?

SEO for a small business usually costs a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month, paid as a monthly retainer. Packages published on agency websites and checked on October 28, 2026 start at US$499 a month from firms pricing in dollars, £295 plus VAT in the UK and PKR 20,000 in Pakistan. In the largest price survey available, 79.1 percent of SEO providers in the US and Canada charged at least $1,001 a month on retainer (Ahrefs, 439 providers).

Every figure below is the named firm's own published price, linked to its page. None is a 1920 Agency price.

Provider (market) Published price per month Terms stated on the page
BrightLocal (local SEO software firm, managed service) From US$499 Managed SEO service
Hazara Digitals (Pakistan, selling to US and UK clients) US$499, US$999 or US$1,799 Month-to-month, no minimum contract
Spiderscope (UK) £295, £495, £995 or £1,995, plus VAT £125 plus VAT setup fee for new customers
AIAD (Australia) A$2,000, A$4,000, A$6,000 or A$8,000, plus GST "No lock-in contracts"
Softvirtue (Lahore, Pakistan) PKR 20,000 to 35,000 local; PKR 40,000 to 80,000 national Three-month minimum

Cost guides give ranges, not prices. WebFX's pricing guide puts startups at $500 to $1,500 a month and small businesses at $1,500 to $3,500, without naming the data behind those ranges. Take them as one agency's view.

What each price level actually buys

The price matters less than what it buys each month. The firms above list what each package includes, and that shows where the money goes as the fee rises:

Price level (published example) What the provider lists
Entry local: Spiderscope Standard £295; Softvirtue Local PKR 20,000 to 35,000 Keyword research for your area, title and meta fixes, Google Business Profile setup or optimisation, monthly ranking report; Softvirtue adds technical fixes for speed and crawlability
Growth: Spiderscope Premium £495; Softvirtue National PKR 40,000 to 80,000 New SEO content (Softvirtue: two articles a month), link building outreach or backlink monitoring, competitor gap analysis, site speed work
Managed: Spiderscope Elite £995; AIAD Starter A$2,000 Quarterly meetings and a dedicated account manager (Spiderscope); blog content, on-page work, backlinks and a monthly report (AIAD)
Larger programmes: AIAD Business A$4,000 to Scale A$6,000 Schema markup, speed and image fixes, monthly meetings, then a content calendar, competitor reviews, new pages and Google Business Profile posts

So entry packages pay mainly for fixes and a local listing, and new content and links appear from the middle tier up. Google's own guide to hiring an SEO lists the services SEOs provide, including site reviews, technical advice, content development, keyword research and, now, "optimizing for generative AI". Google treats AI answer visibility as part of an SEO's work, so ask whether a quote already includes it before paying for it twice.

If your site gets little traffic from Google, or the traffic never turns into enquiries, that is the problem our SEO services for small businesses are built to fix: technical problems first, then the few pages closest to bringing in business.

How SEO providers charge

Most SEO providers charge a monthly retainer, and many also take one-off projects or hourly work. In Ahrefs' survey, 78.2 percent of providers offered retainers, 48.9 percent per-project pricing and 34.8 percent hourly rates; many use more than one model.

  • Monthly retainer. The most popular band was $501 to $1,000 a month (20.4 percent of providers), and 68.8 percent charged $2,000 or less. Agencies averaged $3,209 a month, consultants $3,250 and freelancers $1,349.
  • Hourly. The most popular rate was $75 to $100 (24 percent), and 90 percent charged $150 an hour or less. Credo's survey, with charts dated 2019, put US SEO agencies at $147.93 an hour on average.
  • Per project. Audits and one-off fixes. The most popular band in Ahrefs' data was $2,501 to $5,000 (21.2 percent).
  • Setup fees. In Credo's data, 16.7 percent of SEO providers charged an onboarding fee and 47.52 percent said they did not. Spiderscope publishes a £125 setup fee.

A one-off audit suits a site that needs fixing once and has someone in-house to carry out the list. A retainer suits a business that needs new pages and checks every month.

Where the "average" SEO prices come from

Almost every cost guide and AI answer repeats one number: small businesses pay about $1,557 a month for SEO. That figure comes from Ahrefs' pricing survey, and it is narrower than it sounds:

  • It is what sellers charge, not what businesses pay. Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers and checked each one's website, not their clients.
  • It is the average for local SEO. Ahrefs then says small-business SEO is "likely around $1,557 per month on average, similar to local SEO costs". That is an estimate, not a measurement of small businesses.
  • It blends countries. In the US and Canada, 79.1 percent of providers charged at least $1,001 a month on retainer. In India, 76 percent charged $1,000 or less. A worldwide average sits between two very different markets.
  • It is not dated. The page was last updated on August 15, 2024 and does not say when the answers were collected.

The other survey cost guides cite, Credo's, had 383 respondents, was last updated in July 2022, and its charts are dated 2019. Half of its providers had a retainer minimum under $3,000 a month, and 15 percent a minimum of $5,000 or more.

The ranking cost guides we checked for this article, from 2022 to 2024, give ranges such as "$500 to $5,000 a month" with no source at all. Read every average as a starting point for questions, then compare real quotes for the same scope.

Local SEO vs national SEO cost

Local SEO costs less because there are fewer competitors for "near me" and city searches. In Ahrefs' data, providers serving local markets charged $1,557 a month on average, and those serving clients worldwide charged $3,474, more than twice as much. Softvirtue's published prices show the same gap within one firm: PKR 20,000 to 35,000 for local SEO and PKR 40,000 to 80,000 for national.

Local SEO also has costs that national SEO does not:

  • The Google Business Profile itself is free. Google's Business Profile page says creating a profile and listing your business on Google is free. You pay for the time to keep it complete, post updates and answer reviews.
  • Each location adds work. BrightLocal's own software prices rise from US$41 a month for one location to US$62 for two to five, on monthly billing, and an agency's time rises the same way.
  • Directory listings. BrightLocal's citation builder charges $3.20 per directory site, or as little as $2 with bulk credits.

Only target places where you really have a location or serve customers. Google's spam policies list "multiple domain names or pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page" as doorway abuse, so a page for every nearby city with nothing different on each is a risk, not an extra.

What moves the cost of SEO

The size of the job sets the price: how far behind your site is, how hard the competition is, and how much new content the plan needs. Ahrefs' survey shows how much the provider alone changes the monthly figure:

What changes Lower Higher Source
Who does the work Freelancers: $1,349 a month on average Agencies $3,209; consultants $3,250 Ahrefs survey
Provider's experience Up to 2 years: $1,541 5 to 10 years: $3,648 Ahrefs survey
Market served Local markets: $1,557 Worldwide: $3,474 Ahrefs survey
Where the provider is India: 76% charge $1,000 or less US and Canada: 79.1% charge $1,001 or more Ahrefs survey
Number of locations One location Each extra location adds listings, pages and reviews BrightLocal price steps
Content needed each month Fixes only New pages and articles every month Package inclusions above

Two things on your side change the quote as well: the state of the site (a 20-page site with clean code needs less work than a large store with years of technical problems), and whether the provider makes changes directly or briefs your developer.

How long does SEO take to work?

SEO usually takes months, and new pages take longest. Ahrefs' 2025 study (Patrick Stox, May 15, 2025) found that only 1.74 percent of newly published pages reached Google's top 10 within a year. In a second sample of 2 million English pages that had content, the figure was 6.11 percent.

Many guides still quote "5.7 percent of new pages reach the top 10 within a year". That was Ahrefs' 2017 figure, and its own update found the share has fallen. The same study found:

  • 72.9 percent of pages in Google's top 10 are more than three years old, up from 59 percent in 2017.
  • The average page ranking first is five years old.
  • Of the pages that did reach the top 10, 40.82 percent got there within a month, so a page that ranks at all often ranks early.
  • If a page is not in the top 10 after about six months, Ahrefs suggests updating it.

Another line often credited to Google, that SEO takes "four months to a year", is not in Google's current guide to hiring an SEO (last updated June 5, 2026). The guide gives no timeframe. It tells you to ask the SEO: "What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? How do you measure your success?"

For budgeting, that means planning for at least six months before judging new pages. At Ahrefs' $1,557 average, six months comes to about $9,342; at a $499 entry package, $2,994. Fixes to pages you already have, such as titles, internal links and a broken setup, often show sooner than new pages.

What Google says about hiring an SEO

Google publishes its own guide for business owners hiring an SEO, and it answers the questions most cost guides skip. From Google Search Central:

  • "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."
  • "Google never accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results."
  • "Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that email you out of the blue."
  • Avoid SEOs that talk about link popularity schemes, submitting your site to thousands of search engines, or a "priority submit" to Google.
  • "A great time to hire is when you're considering a site redesign (the earlier, the better), or planning to launch a new site."

Google suggests asking for examples of past work, whether the SEO follows Google Search Essentials, their experience in your industry and your country or city, how long they have been in business, and whether they will share every change they make to your site. Put those questions to every provider before you compare prices.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

SEO is worth it when the customers it brings cover the fee within the time you can wait. Divide the monthly fee by your profit per customer to get the number of extra customers SEO must bring each month to break even. This is our arithmetic:

Monthly SEO fee Profit per customer $100 $250 $1,000
$500 5 customers 2 0.5
$1,500 15 6 1.5
$3,000 30 12 3

A dental practice or law firm with high-value clients can justify a larger fee than a low-margin shop. Unlike ads, the visits themselves are free once you rank, and rankings fade slowly when you stop rather than at once. Those visits only become customers if someone answers quickly; our guide to automating lead follow-up covers replying to every form within minutes.

If you need enquiries this month, ads are faster. Our Meta ads vs Google ads guide explains which to start with, and what Google Ads management costs prices the fee and budget side. Many small businesses run ads for demand now while SEO builds.

Do it yourself, hire a freelancer, an agency or in-house?

You can do basic SEO yourself, hire a freelancer for a defined job, use an agency for ongoing work across technical fixes, content and local listings, or employ someone in-house.

Option What it costs Suits
Do it yourself Google Business Profile free; tools from US$29 (Ahrefs Starter) to US$139 a month (Semrush SEO plan, monthly billing); Semrush's free plan allows 10 reports a day One location, a small site, an owner with time each week
Freelancer $1,349 a month on average in Ahrefs' survey A defined job: an audit, a set of pages, a local listing
Agency $3,209 a month on average in Ahrefs' survey; published packages from US$499 Ongoing technical, content and local work with reporting
In-house US median pay of $78,760 a year for market research analysts and marketing specialists (May 2025, before benefits and tools) A business large enough to keep one person busy, with someone senior to check the work

The Bureau of Labor Statistics category is broad and lists search marketing strategists as a related role; it is not an SEO-only salary. Tool prices are each vendor's page on October 28, 2026.

Red flags in a cheap SEO quote

A cheap quote is a problem when it hides how the work is done, not because it is cheap. The warning signs:

  • Guaranteed rankings or a promised date for page one. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking.
  • Links bought in bulk. Google's spam policies name "buying or selling links for ranking purposes" as link spam. Ask how links are earned.
  • Hundreds of AI-written pages. The same policies name "using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users" as scaled content abuse.
  • No access to your data. You should own your Google Search Console, Analytics and Business Profile, and the provider should work in them as a user you can remove.
  • No list of what each month includes. Compare quotes by the work listed, not the price.

Google says sites that break these policies "may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all". Recovering from that costs more than the savings.

How 1920 Agency prices SEO

1920 Agency does not publish SEO prices. We audit the site, read its Search Console data and study the pages that rank for your buyers' searches, then propose a monthly plan that lists the fixes and pages each month covers, so you can see what you are paying for.

We rebuilt and run SEO for Progen Aesthetics, a UK clinic, and run daily SEO monitoring on our own operations, which is how we know what a month of SEO work involves. We follow Google's spam policies: no bought links, no mass-produced pages. We are an independent agency based in Islamabad, Pakistan, working with clients in the US, UK, Australia and Pakistan.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost per month for a small business?

Published packages checked on October 28, 2026 start at US$499 a month (BrightLocal's managed SEO, and Hazara Digitals' Starter plan), £295 plus VAT in the UK and PKR 20,000 in Pakistan. In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, 79.1 percent of US and Canadian providers charged at least $1,001 a month on retainer. WebFX's pricing guide puts small businesses at $1,500 to $3,500 a month.

How much should I pay for local SEO?

In Ahrefs' survey, SEO providers who serve local markets charged $1,557 a month on average, against $3,474 for those serving clients worldwide. Published local packages start lower: Spiderscope's Standard plan is £295 a month plus VAT, and Softvirtue in Lahore charges PKR 20,000 to 35,000. Each extra location adds work, and BrightLocal's own software costs more as locations increase.

Is $500 per month enough for SEO for a small business?

It can be, for one location in a market with little competition, if the work is basic on-page fixes, a Google Business Profile and a monthly report. Published packages at that level, such as Spiderscope's £295 Standard plan, do not list new content or link building. If your competitors publish and earn links every month, $500 is unlikely to buy enough hours to catch up.

How long does SEO take to work?

Usually months. Ahrefs' 2025 study found only 1.74 percent of newly published pages reached Google's top 10 within a year, and that 72.9 percent of pages in the top 10 are more than three years old. Fixes to an existing site can show sooner than new pages. Google's own hiring guide tells you to ask an SEO what results to expect and in what timeframe.

Is SEO worth it for small business?

It is worth it when the extra customers it brings cover the fee within the time you can wait. Divide the monthly fee by your profit per customer: at $1,500 a month and $250 profit per job, SEO has to bring six extra customers a month to break even. If you need customers this month, paid ads are faster; SEO pays off over a longer period.

Can you pay Google for SEO?

No. Google's guide for business owners says Google never accepts money to include or rank sites in its search results. You can pay Google for ads, which are labeled as sponsored, but organic rankings cannot be bought from Google.

Can I do SEO on my own?

Yes, for basic work. A Google Business Profile is free, and tools cost from about US$29 to US$139 a month (Ahrefs Starter and Semrush's SEO plan, checked October 28, 2026). What you spend instead of money is time: technical fixes, writing pages and checking results each month.

Does 1920 Agency publish SEO prices?

No. 1920 Agency audits the site, its Search Console data and the pages that rank for your buyers' searches first, then proposes a monthly plan that lists the fixes and pages each month covers.
