SEO ROI Calculator: What a Ranking Is Worth

The short answer

SEO returns are monthly searches times the click-through rate at your position, times your conversion rate, times the profit per conversion, minus what the SEO costs. First Page Sage's 2026 data puts position 1 at 22.6% of clicks on results without an AI answer but 3.6% when Google shows one, and 7.1% blended, so the curve you choose changes the answer more than anything else. Because the cost starts before the traffic, judge SEO on a two-year payback, not on month one.

How the calculator works

The calculator turns a ranking into money in four steps, then spreads it over time:

What Formula
Visits a month Monthly searches × click-through rate at your position
Conversions a month Visits × conversion rate
Gross profit a month Conversions × value of a conversion × gross margin
Same visits as Google Ads Visits × cost per click
Net by month Running total of (gross profit × share of full traffic reached) − SEO cost
Payback The first month the running total reaches zero

Traffic is assumed to grow evenly from nothing to full over the months you expect it to take to rank, while the SEO cost is paid from month one. That is closer to how SEO works than a calculator that counts full traffic from the start.

A worked example: the keywords a business targets get 10,000 searches a month, and it expects position 2, where First Page Sage's blended rate is 3.0%. That is 300 visits a month. If 3% convert and a conversion is worth $400 at a 50% margin, ranking is worth $1,800 a month in gross profit. Buying the same 300 visits as Google Ads clicks at LocaliQ's 2026 average of $5.42 would cost about $1,626 a month. At $1,500 a month of SEO and six months to rank, the work is $900 behind after the first year, pays back in month 15 and is $2,700 ahead after two years.

Click-through rate by position in 2026

The click-through rate is the number that changes the answer most, and studies disagree. The calculator uses First Page Sage's Google CTR by ranking position 2026, last updated September 22, 2026. It is built from 1,184 client and panel domains, 3.67 billion Google impressions and 41.2 million clicks between March 1 and August 31, 2026, blended across desktop and mobile and weighted to US search volume. It is First Page Sage's own data, from Search Console properties it manages or has panel access to.

Position AI answer present No AI answer Blended
1 3.6% 22.6% 7.1%
2 1.4% 10.2% 3.0%
3 0.8% 5.8% 1.7%
4 0.5% 3.7% 1.1%
5 0.3% 2.5% 0.7%
6 0.3% 1.8% 0.6%
7 0.2% 1.3% 0.4%
8 0.2% 0.9% 0.3%
9 0.1% 0.7% 0.2%
10 0.1% 0.5% 0.2%

Other studies put position 1 higher. Backlinko, last updated April 16, 2025, found an average of 27.6% for the first result and 54.4% of clicks going to the top three, from 1,312,881 pages and 12,166,560 queries in Search Console accounts supplied by Semrush. It does not state the period the data covers. If you already rank for similar searches, the most reliable rate is your own, from the Performance report in Google Search Console: choose "My own rate" in the calculator.

What the numbers leave out

  • Ranking is not guaranteed. The calculator shows what a position is worth if you reach it. Google's own guide, Do you need an SEO?, suggests asking any provider what results to expect and in what timeframe, and says plainly: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."
  • Search volume tools estimate. Keyword Planner and SEO tools give ranges and estimates, not exact counts. Treat the result as a range.
  • Pages keep earning. A page that ranks can keep bringing visits after the work slows, and one page often ranks for many related searches. The calculator counts only the searches you enter, so it tends to understate long-term value.
  • AI answers vary by search. Questions often trigger an AI answer, while searches for a service near you often do not. Run the calculator for each group of keywords with the right curve.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate SEO ROI?

Multiply the monthly searches for your target keywords by the click-through rate at the position you expect, then by your conversion rate and the profit per conversion. That is the monthly gross profit once you rank. Subtract the monthly SEO cost, and spread the traffic over the months it takes to rank, to see the first-year and two-year net and the month it pays back.

What click-through rate does position 1 on Google get?

It depends on the results page. First Page Sage's 2026 study, from its clients' Search Console data for March to August 2026, found 22.6% at position 1 when Google showed no AI answer, 3.6% when it did, and 7.1% blended. Backlinko's study, last updated April 2025, found an average of 27.6%.

How do AI Overviews change SEO ROI?

They cut the clicks a ranking earns. In First Page Sage's 2026 figures, position 1 drops from 22.6% to 3.6% when an AI answer is present. Check whether your target searches show an AI answer, and use that curve for those keywords.

How long does SEO take to pay back?

It depends on how long ranking takes and what the traffic is worth, and no source we checked publishes a reliable average. The calculator lets you set the months to rank; with the example numbers, the work pays back in month 15, which is why SEO should be judged over two years.

Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads?

Once you rank, often yes: the calculator shows what the same visits would cost as Google Ads clicks at your cost per click. But SEO costs money for months before the traffic comes, and rankings are never guaranteed, while ads bring visits from the first day. Many businesses use ads while SEO builds.
