GoHighLevel vs HubSpot for a Small Service Business

The short answer

For a small service business that wins work by replying fast to leads, GoHighLevel is usually the cheaper, simpler fit: one plan from $97 a month includes unlimited contacts and users, with texts and calls billed by use. HubSpot is the better choice if you mainly send email and track deals, and its CRM starts free, but its text messaging needs Marketing Hub Professional, listed at $800 to $890 a month plus a $3,000 one-time onboarding fee. Compare the cost of the tools you will actually use, not the headline price.

GoHighLevel vs HubSpot is a choice between a bundle and a platform. GoHighLevel puts the CRM, texting, calls, email, calendars and funnels in one account for a monthly plan plus usage. HubSpot starts with a free CRM and adds paid hubs for marketing, sales and service. Every figure below comes from the vendor's own pages, checked on 2 November 2026.

Which is better for a small service business?

For a small service business that books jobs from calls, texts and web forms, GoHighLevel is usually the better fit; for a team that mostly sends email and manages deals, HubSpot usually is. The deciding question is where your leads go cold. If it is the first five minutes after an enquiry, you need texting, missed-call replies and booking in the same tool. If it is the pipeline after the first call, you need a CRM your team will keep updated.

Question Leans GoHighLevel Leans HubSpot
Do you reply to leads by text and calls? Yes, built in (usage billed) Texting needs Marketing Hub Professional
Is email your main channel? Works A free tier to start
Do you serve many clients from one login? Sub-accounts on every plan Not what it is built for
Do you want to start free? 14-day trial only Free CRM, 2 users, 1,000 contacts
Is there someone to build workflows? Needed Less needed to start

The same split shows up in our guide to automating lead follow-up: the tool matters less than whether the reply is fast, consented and stops when the lead answers.

How much do GoHighLevel and HubSpot cost?

GoHighLevel lists three paid plans at $97, $297 and $497 a month. HubSpot lists a free CRM and then prices each hub separately, so the cost depends on which hubs, how many seats and how many marketing contacts you need. This is each vendor's own listing.

Product Listed price What it includes
HighLevel Starter $97/month or $970/year 3 sub-accounts, unlimited contacts and users
HighLevel Unlimited $297/month or $2,970/year Unlimited sub-accounts, basic API access
HighLevel Founder $497/month or $4,970/year Everything in Unlimited plus rebilling with markup
HubSpot free CRM $0 2 users, 1,000 contacts
HubSpot Starter $20 per seat per month; $7 per seat on annual upfront payment and $10 month to month for new customers Marketing Hub Starter includes 1,000 marketing contacts
Marketing Hub Professional $890/month, or $800/month on an annual commitment, plus a required $3,000 one-time onboarding 3 core seats, 2,000 marketing contacts
Marketing Hub Enterprise $3,600/month, plus a required $7,000 onboarding 5 core seats, 10,000 marketing contacts

Sources: HighLevel pricing, HubSpot CRM pricing and Marketing Hub pricing. HubSpot's page does not label which Professional figure is monthly and which is annual; we read $890 as monthly billing and $800 as the annual commitment from the page's "Pay Monthly" and "Pay Annually" toggle. Sales Hub is priced separately, with a one-time $1,500 onboarding listed for Professional on its pricing page. Third-party comparisons quote different HubSpot figures, and HubSpot changes its pricing, so check the page on the day you buy.

What does texting cost on each platform?

This is the part most comparisons skip. HighLevel marks email and SMS marketing, inbound and outbound calling and several AI features as usage-based on its pricing page, so texts and calls are billed on top of the plan. HubSpot offers marketing texting only on higher plans. Its SMS help article says 10DLC (standard business-number) texting requires "Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise" and that "You can only send SMS messages from US-based numbers", with a single marketing number per account. It adds that "SMS messaging in HubSpot is not currently supported for sole proprietors" and that registration "may take six to eight business days" for 10DLC numbers.

So a one-person business that wants to text leads cannot use HubSpot's marketing texting, and a small team must buy a plan whose list price is several times GoHighLevel's before texting is switched on. If you do not text customers, none of this matters.

Either way, US business texting needs carrier registration and prior written consent. Our guide to consent before texting leads sets out the FCC, UK and WhatsApp rules, and the GoHighLevel setup checklist covers the registration step.

What would a small business pay in year one?

A business with about 5,000 marketing contacts that wants automation and texting would see a listed year-one total of $970 to $1,164 on GoHighLevel and $15,600 on HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional, before usage fees. This is arithmetic on the published prices above, not a quote; your seats and contact growth will change it.

Line GoHighLevel Starter HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional
Platform, 12 months $1,164 on monthly billing, or $970 on the yearly plan $9,600 on the annual commitment ($800 x 12)
Contacts above the included amount None: contacts are unlimited One extra 5,000-contact block at $250 a month, $3,000 a year
One-time onboarding None required (setup help is optional) $3,000, required
Usage (texts, calls, email) Billed by use Credits are $0.010 each beyond those included
Listed total before usage $970 to $1,164 $15,600

HubSpot's product catalog lists $250 a month for each extra block of 5,000 marketing contacts between 2,001 and 22,000 and says "If you exceed your marketing contacts tier at any time, you will be billed immediately." That contact-based billing is why a growing list raises HubSpot's cost but not HighLevel's plan price. It also bills only marketing contacts, so customer records you never email are free, which can narrow the gap.

The comparison flips if you only need a CRM. A two-person team on HubSpot's free CRM pays nothing, and buying GoHighLevel to replace a free tool you are happy with is not worth it.

What does setup take?

HubSpot is faster to start, and GoHighLevel asks for more building before it pays off. HubSpot's free CRM can be used almost immediately. GoHighLevel needs a sending domain with email authentication, a registered text number, calendars, pipelines and workflows that stop when a lead replies. We list each step in our GoHighLevel setup checklist and the published fees in what a GoHighLevel setup costs.

HubSpot has its own setup bill on higher plans: the required onboarding fees above. Compare the software price and the setup price together, because one is often cheap when the other is not.

Where does each one fall short?

Each has a known weak side, and neither fixes a slow process.

  • GoHighLevel: it is priced and packaged for agencies first (sub-accounts, rebilling), so a single business pays for structure it may not use. Usage billing means a busy texting sequence costs more than the plan price suggests, so ask for a monthly usage estimate before you commit.
  • HubSpot: the price climbs with features, seats and contacts. Texting sits on higher tiers, and onboarding is required on Professional and Enterprise.
  • Both: a workflow that texts leads without consent is a compliance problem in either system.

Check who published a comparison. One page that ranks for this query, Softr's comparison, is published by a no-code app builder that promotes its own product, and it lists Marketing Hub Professional at $1,300 a month, against $800 to $890 on HubSpot's own page today. When sources disagree, trust the vendor's page and its date.

Which should you choose?

Choose GoHighLevel if leads arrive by call, text and form, speed decides who wins, and someone can build and maintain the workflows. Choose HubSpot if your team lives in email and deal tracking, you want a free start, or you do not text customers. If you are unsure, begin on HubSpot's free CRM and move when the cost of slow follow-up becomes clear.

If you want GoHighLevel and would rather not build it yourself, that is work our AI and automation service covers. We are an independent agency, not a HighLevel or HubSpot partner or reseller, and we do not publish prices: we map your lead flow first and then quote the project.

Frequently asked questions

Is GoHighLevel better than HubSpot for a small business?

It depends on how you win customers. GoHighLevel suits service businesses that depend on fast text and call follow-up, and it bundles those tools in one plan. HubSpot suits businesses that mainly send email, track deals with a team and want a free place to start. Each is the wrong tool for the other's job.

Is HubSpot cheaper than GoHighLevel?

At the entry level, yes. HubSpot's CRM is free for up to 2 users and 1,000 contacts, and Starter lists at $20 a seat a month, against GoHighLevel's $97 plan. Once you need automation, texting and more contacts, Marketing Hub Professional is listed at $800 to $890 a month with a $3,000 onboarding fee, and GoHighLevel can be cheaper.

Does HubSpot have text messaging?

Yes, but not on every plan. HubSpot's help center says 10DLC texting requires Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise, allows one US number per account and does not support sole proprietors. It says registration may take six to eight business days.

Does GoHighLevel charge extra for texts and calls?

Yes. HighLevel's pricing page marks email and SMS marketing, calling and several AI features as usage-based. Those charges are separate from the monthly plan and may apply during the free trial.

Can I use GoHighLevel for a single business, not an agency?

Yes. HighLevel describes the $97 Starter plan as perfect for smaller businesses and solo marketers. You get three sub-accounts, though a single business only needs one.

Does HubSpot charge an onboarding fee?

On higher plans, yes. HubSpot's pages list a required one-time onboarding of $3,000 for Marketing Hub Professional and $7,000 for Enterprise, and $1,500 for Sales Hub Professional. Starter plans list none.

Can I switch from HubSpot to GoHighLevel later?

Yes, by exporting contacts and deals and rebuilding workflows. Contacts move easily; automations do not, and you will need to carry over text consent records. Plan the move as a small project.
